About Suzani

“Suzani” means needlework, from the Persian word suzan (needle). Traditional Suzani pieces feature a cotton or silk base with embroidery in basma (Bukhara couching) and chain stitch. Popular motifs include sun and moon disks, tulips, carnations, irises, pomegranates, leaves, vines, and occasional fish and birds — each piece a story woven in thread.
